UN Secretary-General: Referendums in Ukraine ‘not an expression of popular will’

The referendums that were held in a few parts of southern and eastern Ukraine, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, “are not a true manifestation of the popular will.”
In a statement that was cited by the American Al-Hurra channel this evening, Thursday, the Secretary-General of the United Nations emphasised that it is against international law for one state to annex another state’s territory by the threat or use of force.

Any Russian decision to go further with the annexation of Ukrainian territory, in his opinion, would be illegal and deserving of criticism since it would further damage the chances for peace.
More than ever, he continued, it is imperative that action be taken to prevent the catastrophic war in Ukraine.

This occurs at the same time that the electoral commissioners in the eastern and southern Ukrainian regions that held the referendum on joining Russia reported that the referendum’s final results revealed a resounding majority of people supported joining. .
