Kyiv appoints a new ambassador to Berlin

Ukraine has named Oleksiy Makeyev as its next ambassador to Germany, following Andrei Melnik.
In response to a question in this respect, a German Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated today, Saturday, that the Ukrainian government submitted to Berlin what is known as a request to accept Makiev’s nomination as an ambassador, and that German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier consented to this request.

It is worth noting that the country’s approval of the nominated ambassador is one of several procedures leading up to ultimate accreditation.
The choice of Makeyev as Ukraine’s next ambassador to Berlin has long been a source of contention.
Makeyev was the Political Director of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry in Kyiv for many years. His appointment has not yet been officially confirmed.

Melnik was fired by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in July, and he is slated to depart Germany on October 14 to accept a job in the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
Melnik’s severe condemnation of the German government at the outset of Russia’s war on his country was not his only claim to fame, as he consistently condemned Germany’s attitude toward Russia. Melnik has been advocating for greater German weaponry shipments to reach his country in recent months.
