Ireland’s Prime Minister: Changing Britain’s Prime Minister offers opportunity to break Brexit deadlock

Irish Prime Leader Michael Martin declared on Saturday that the election of a new British prime minister the next week will present a chance for a fresh strategy to end the Brexit impasse.
According to Martin, the Irish-British relationship is being tested and damaged by the growing Brexit conflict, and the next two weeks will be key.

The comments of Truss or her rival Rishi Sunak will be closely watched and set the tone for a new chapter in relations with both Ireland and the European Union, the prime minister of Ireland said, adding that he hoped the new Conservative leader would send a serious signal that they wanted to put the dispute behind them.

According to Ireland’s Prime Minister Michael Martin, unilateralism does not work and only serves to increase mistrust and suspicion. We believe that by electing a new prime minister, we may foster a fresh spirit that will facilitate negotiations.

He emphasised that unilateral action violates the protocol necessary to uphold the Good Friday Agreement, adding that it tests and fractures our alliance, increases the possibility of further unrest in Northern Ireland, and harms important economic sectors.
Maros Ekovi, a commissioner for the European Union, pleaded with the UK government on Friday not to move on with its legislation to rip up a portion of the Northern Ireland protocol because it would further deteriorate relations.
