Tasman and his men believed that the newly discovered land formed part of the great polar continent and was anchored on December 18 at a wide entrance, which he thought was a thin bay (and it was the Cook Strait), and he gave him the name Mordenaars (or the killers and later called the Gulf of the massacre), where he killed several of his men By the indigenous population..
