Lapid informs Biden of Israel’s opposition to Iran nuclear deal

According to a White House official, US President Joe Biden met with Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid on Wednesday, as Tehran sought additional guarantees from Washington to resurrect the 2015 nuclear deal, which Israel firmly opposes.
Lapids office, for its part, said in a statement on the two leaders’ call that they discussed at length about nuclear negotiations and their united commitment to prevent Iran from gaining a nuclear weapon.

A special source told Al-Arabiya and Al-Hadath that Lapid convinced Biden of Israel’s opposition to the nuclear deal with Iran.
He further stated that the Israeli Prime Minister informed the US President that Israel has the unrestricted right to defend itself.

This comes after Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian stated in Moscow on Wednesday that his country requires stronger guarantees from Washington in order to resurrect the 2015 nuclear deal, and that the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency should discontinue its politically motivated investigations into the matter. After 16 months of indirect discussions between Tehran and Washington, EU foreign policy head Josep Borrell announced on August 8 that the EU has made a final offer to resurrect the accord.
Amir Abdollahian stated that Tehran was carefully analysing Washington’s reaction to the final agreement sent by the European Union as the nuclear negotiations’ coordinator last week.

In a joint news conference with his Russian colleague in Moscow, the minister continued, “Iran is carefully reading the language written by the European Union.” To establish a long-term deal, we need firmer commitments from the other party.
Abdollahian did not elaborate on what better assurances included, but throughout months of discussions in Vienna with Washington, Tehran requested guarantees that no future US president would withdraw from the agreement, as former President Donald Trump did in 2018.
