US Navy thwarts Iranian attempt to seize ship

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Navy’s attempt to seize an unmanned surface ship controlled by the US Fifth Fleet in the Gulf was prevented by the US Navy, according to a statement released by the fleet today, Tuesday.
The incident happened on Monday as the US Fifth Fleet tugged the unmanned ship in an effort to capture it after spotting the Revolutionary Guards ship at eleven in the evening local time.

The commander of the Central Command of the Navy and the US Fifth Fleet, Brad Cooper, described the actions of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as “blatant and unjustified, and contrary to the behavior of professional naval forces. ”
The statement indicated that the Revolutionary Guards ship left the area after four hours, and that the US Navy resumed its operations without further incidents.

The US Navy has frequently contacted the Iranians, according to Timothy Hawkins, a spokesman for the Fifth Fleet, in an interview with the Associated Press.
The incident occurred amid growing tensions between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s precarious nuclear deal with international powers; Iran has not yet remarked on it.
