Zimbabwe Minister: Half of the country’s population does not own the Internet

The Minister of Information Technology at Zimbabwe, Genevaian Mosaire, stressed that half of the country’s population has no access to the Internet, warning that excluding the country from the technological and digital field deepens its exclusion from the economic and social fields.

The local newspaper (New Zimbabwe) quoted the minister as saying during the celebrations of the International Day to Circular Information – that although the rates of the spread of the Internet are witnessing an increase in Zimbabwe, and currently reached a little more than 60 % at the country level, many regions are facing Challenges in covering the Internet to actual access to the Internet, which represents a major challenge for many citizens.

Musaire pointed out that the main obstacles lie in the cost of exorbitant devices, in addition to the price of data, although smartphones are used by the poor; However, the digital gap between the rich and the poor is still large, as well as the digital gap between men and women is still continuing.
The procedures followed by the government include to reduce some of these challenges; Establishing community information centers in addition to reforming the political situation.

The government has established in cooperation with the information and communications sector; Information technology laboratories and basic stations in all provinces to cover all areas, including marginalized areas that have no retinal coverage..
