China demands an end to violations of Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity

The illegal presence of foreign forces and illegal military operations in Syria must end, said Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, according to Xinhua, noting that respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity is an important principle enshrined in the United Nations Charter and a cornerstone of international relations.

He added that the only path to a political settlement is for the Syrian people to decide their country’s destiny on their own, without outside intervention, expressing his optimism that the local council elections planned by the Syrian government in September will be successful.

The Chinese envoy reiterated that cross-border relief is a temporary arrangement in Syria, and urged a transition from cross-border operations to cross-border operations in order to shift to a higher frequency with a clear timetable for the eventual end of cross-border relief. He explained that economic recovery and development are the final means by which Syria can extricate itself from the humanitarian crisis.

However, he added, for a long time, unilateral sanctions have disrupted the lifelines of Syria’s economic recovery and development, and illegal looting stole vital resources for Syria’s economic recovery and development, causing incalculable harm to the Syrian people, calling for an end to unilateral sanctions against Syria and illegal looting of its legal resources.

China asks that Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity be respected.
