France is preparing to conduct its largest military maneuvers in 2023

The maneuvers will focus on fighting a major conflict against an unlimited foreign country, according to the commander of the France -General Anti -Pillars Unit, Eve Metire.
The training will come on the impact of the war in Ukraine, which broke out in February this year.
“The geopolitical context justifies these exercises,” Metir said, but added that the plan started its preparation since 2020 and followed a strategic French review published in 2017.

He explained that the review indicated “the need to prepare for a great conflict” nearly two decades after unequal wars, most of which are with groups, not countries, such as terrorists.
He added that the exercises called “Orion” will include European countries in NATO, Germany, Britain, Belgium, Italy and Spain, in addition to the United States.

Between late February and early May, 7,000 military personnel will go through training that include naval operations in the Mediterranean, amphibious operation and air bridge in southern France.
This stage will simulate an intervention in a country where it is undermined militia activities, and a neighboring nuclear state that fuel the turmoil.

From mid -April to the beginning of May, the soldiers will participate in a simulation of an air conflict with a strong state, which includes the deployment of up to 12,000 soldiers in northern France.
Orion will include land, sea, air and space components in addition to electronic warfare and civil operations such as first aid and transportation, according to Metir..
