The White House stated its reluctance to tolerate China’s heightened military activities near Taiwan, emphasising its resolve to continue providing security support to the island and its adherence to the one-China concept.
Following the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei, China is attempting to set a new norm for its Taiwan-related actions, according to John Kirby, White House National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator.
It will become the new normal in Taiwan, and we have officially said that we will not accept it, no matter how much the Chinese side wants it.
Kirby cited the passage of two US Navy vessels across the Taiwan Strait as evidence that Washington will not forsake its one-China policy, adding, “As we have stated, nothing has changed in terms of our commitment to the one-China policy.”
Nothing has changed in terms of our opposition to Taiwan independence, and nothing has changed in terms of our commitment to doing all possible under US law to assist Taiwan in defending itself and our national security interests in the area.
