Mossad chief will head to Washington to discuss nuclear deal

This visit will be Israel’s latest attempt to persuade Western nations not to renew the 2015 agreement with Tehran.
According to Israel, the pact will ease the financing of Iranian-backed extremists while not preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
According to an unnamed senior Israeli source, Mossad head David Barnea will visit Washington within a week to participate in closed-door sessions in Congress on the Iran deal.

And, earlier on Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid revealed that the Israeli diplomatic campaign against the accord includes the recent talks in the United States of the National Security Adviser and the Minister of Defense.
We are working hard to ensure that Americans and Europeans understand the dangers associated in the transaction, Lapid added.

He emphasised that the 2015 accord was not a good bargain and that the current formula posed additional dangers.
The 2015 deal between Iran and the major countries (the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, China, and Germany) permitted the easing of international sanctions placed on Tehran in exchange for Tehran curtailing its nuclear activity.

However, former US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew his nation from it in 2018, reimposing punishing sanctions on Iran. Israel applauded the move.
However, Joe Biden, who replaced Trump as President of the United States, stated his resolve to restore his country to the accord on the condition that Iran honours its promises.

After intermittent talks that began in April 2021, the indirect negotiations between the two parties reached a critical stage: the European Union, the talks’ coordinator, presented a draught final settlement, which Iran suspended last week and is awaiting a response from the US on, raising Israel’s concern.

The new deal, according to the prime minister, should have an expiration date, be subject to stricter supervision, and contribute to tackling Iran’s ballistic missile development and participation in terrorism throughout the Middle East.
We can reach such an agreement if the confirmed (Iranian) military threat is put on the table, and if the Iranians understand that their disobedience and dishonesty will cost them dearly.

Lapid stated that we instructed the Israeli army and intelligence services to prepare for any situation.

The head of Mossad will travel to Washington to discuss the nuclear accord.
