Calgary Volunteers Add Final Touches To Field of Crosses During Night of Lights

The 3,620 markers that make up Calgary’s Field of Crosses were all given lit candles at the base on Thursday by staff and students from St. Mary’s University.
Every Service Member Honorad at the Annual Display is personally collected on the eve of Remembrance Day as part of the “night of lights” that enters the country.
Brianne Dangerfield is a Fifth-Year History Student at St.

Mary claimed that while she was planning each lantern, she had time to think about those who had lost their lives in battle.
“We Make Sure That Their Name Is Said and They’re Remembred Every Single Year,” Said Dangerfield. Instead of just remembering the War, we are remembering the people.
Thursday’s Volunteers were part of St. Mary’s Presidents Volunteer Group, A Program That Gives Students an Opportunity to Give Back While Complesting Their Degrees.

The time spent outside in the sunny but chilly weather, according to Mary’s President and Vice-Chancellor Snda Vanderpool, serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the thousands of service members.
Vanderpool stated, “We Emphasize Educating Students Not Just In Mind, But Also In Heart And Body.” “We want to train them as they’re going this academic program, to begin giving back.

The volunteers who work on the Field of Crosses will continue working throughout the night and into the morning of Remembrance Day.
Crews will start meticulously gathering each component of the display, including the crosses, flags, poppies, and lanterns, on Saturday in order to get them ready for the following year.
The Field of Crosses’ President Susan Schalin stated that without the tireless efforts of volunteers, the annual display would never take place.

We have 100 volunteers who come back each year, according to Schalin. The new volunteers fall behind and learn what to do because the seasoned volunteers simply know what to do.
The Field of Crosses hosts a televised memorial service every year at 10 a.m. that is broadcast live on Global Calgary and the Global TV TV Streaming Services.

During Night of Lights, volunteers from Calgary make final adjustments to the Field of Crosses.
