Tunisian Minister of Family: 85% of violent cases during October “my husband’s violence”

Dr. Amal Belhadj Moussa, the minister of family, women, children, and the elderly, declared that during the month of October, the Green Line recorded 85% of all reports of marital violence.

A collective alert involving all state institutions, civil society organizations, and media outlets is needed to address marital violence and its serious effects on women, children, families, and society as a whole, the minister stated in press statements. Despite a decline in the number of reports of violence received on the green number, the number of cases of marital violence is still on the rise.

According to the minister, 769 communications total about violence against women were reported between January and October 2022, with 77% of those communications involving marital abuse. In contrast, 1441 communications about violence against women were reported in 2021, with 76% of those communications involving marital abuse.

She added that the ministry is committed to continuing the strategic confrontation of violence against women not only at the level of speech but also through a series of procedures and practical measures that were approved with the aim of defining Law No. 58 related to eliminating violence against Women and enforcing its rulings. The minister expressed her rejection and absolute mourning for all manifestations of violence, especially marital violence crimes.
