COP 27 in Sharm El Sheikh featured a roundtable on green hydrogen that was co-chaired by President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Tuesday.
According to President Sisi, Egypt has set goals to become a hub for hydrogen production over the long term. In that context, he expressed hope that developed countries do not shy away from investing in green hydrogen projects at developing countries, given that the technology is quite new.

According to the president, this is why Egypt and Belgium are establishing a platform for green hydrogen producers and consumers to discuss needs and share experiences.
Olaf Scholz, the chancellor of Germany, responded by stating that Africa has the potential to grow into a significant global producer of green hydrogen. Speaking of Europe, Scholz said that the transition to significant reliance on green hydrogen would materialize on the continent by 2050.

Scholz emphasised that Germany is soon to produce 5 GW of green hydrogen and indicated his willingness to work with developing nations in that area. He said that Germany is already establishing strategies for green hydrogen with Morocco, Tunisia, and South Africa.
What’s more, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that investments worth billions of dollars in Africa are necessary to ensure a reliable source of green hydrogen.

Von der Leyen stated, “We already invest in the infrastructure required to transport energy, but investments in the sector need to be diversified.
In that context, the Egyptian President pointed out that some developing countries face challenges pertaining to the storage of renewable and new energy.

On the occasion of COP 27, and that roundtable in specific, President Sisi announced the operation of the first phase of a green hydrogen plant established in collaboration with Norway’s Scatec in Ain Sokhna. The 100 MW capacity of that phase.
