2 dead after truck drives into neighbourhood barbecue in Netherlands

Authorities say a truck crashed into a neighbourhood barbecue in a village on Saturday night (Sunday NZT), killing two people and seriously wounding several more.
In the village of Nieuw-Beijerland, close to Rotterdam, police were looking into what caused the car to veer off the road and crash into a dike.
The driver, a 46-year-old Spaniard, was reportedly apprehended as part of the investigation and sent to a police station.

At the time, the cause of the crash was unknown. Police said in a statement, “For the time being, we are leaving all scenarios about the facts open.”

Police spent the entire night circling the car before a crane and a tow truck pushed it back into the road.
On Saturday night, local Mayor Charlie Aptroot paid a visit to the scene.

He said in a statement, “My sincere condolences go out to the victims, their families, witnesses, and first responders.
He continued by saying that he had spoken to numerous of the audience members and had expressed gratitude for how supportive everyone is of one another.
