Mauritania is postponing the “octopus” season for a month and reveals the reason

The restart of octopus fishing in Mauritania has been delayed from its original date of December 1 this year to January 1, 2023, according to the country’s Ministry of Fishing and Maritime Economy.
The Mauritanian Minister of Fishing and Maritime Economy, Muhammad Abdin Umayyive, announced this decision in a circular, saying it was made to avoid exceeding the octopus fishing quotas for 2022.

According to this circular, “the return of octopus hunting activities to January 1, 2023 was postponed after it was scheduled on December 2022,” as per the regulation outlined in the marine fishing code.
The Mauritanian Institute for Ocean Research and Fishing’s proposal was taken into consideration when making this decision, as well as “the option of reviewing the resumption of fishing from the state of inventory.”
