To avoid a wider conflict … US -Russian secret talks on Ukraine

US officials revealed that US National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, has been involved in recent months in secret talks with prominent assistants of the Russian president in an attempt to reduce the risk of a broader conflict over Ukraine, according to the Wall Street Journal on Sunday.
The officials, who declined to be identified by the newspaper, claimed that another goal of the talks was to forewarn Moscow against the use of nuclear or other WMDs.

They also added that the aim of the conversations was “avoiding the risk of escalation and keeping the communication channels open and not discussing access to a settlement of the war in Ukraine. ”
It is interesting that during the Russian campaign in Ukraine, Russia warned Putin not to use nuclear weapons, and they have continued to do so for the past seven months (and even before).

According to the Union of American Scholars, based on the quantity of nuclear warheads it possesses—5977 as opposed to 5428—Russia has the greatest nuclear force in the world.
The American military has roughly 200 tactical nuclear weapons, half of which are stationed in locations in Italy, Germany, Turkey, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The Russian military also has about 2000 tactical nuclear weapons operationally.
