A century ago, Howard Carter found the boy Tutankhamun’s tomb, together with exquisite furnishings, fashionable clothing, ornamental jewellery, and the fabled golden face mask. Everything was in harmony with the royal burial, which expressed the most prosperous ages in the history of ancient Egypt and inside the mummy covers, Carter discovered a dagger that looked in its place.
The problem was not the glossy iron code on the golden dagger’s cover, which the Egyptians did not discover was its son-in-law until centuries after Tutankhamun’s death. Early iron manufacturing, the fact that the iron came from places outside of American Sentiments was not stressed until 2016.
This discovery is significant because it was made via X-ray analysis without causing any harm to the dagger.
It is a sign of a new method in Egyptology that emphasises preservation because it allows us to make the discoveries that Carter had almost only imagined while leaving the artefacts in good condition for future generations, whether we are studying mummies without removing their casings or simulating ancient landscapes.
