After the final game of his career against Almeria, retired Barcelona defender Gerard Pique addressed the supporters of the Catalan team at the “Spotfai Campy Nou” with a moving statement.
Pique made the announcement that his final game with football would be against Almeria on Thursday of last week.
Yesterday evening in the 13th round of the Spanish League, Barcelona overcame Almeria with two goals without a reply.
With 34 points, Barcelona temporarily leads the Spanish league standings, two points ahead of Real Madrid, who will play Rayo Vallecano in the same round tomorrow.
Pique took part in the game as a member of Barcelona’s starting lineup, and he was removed 6 minutes from the game’s conclusion while the club managed to keep its nets clear.
Pique received a lot of encouragement from his teammates and the Barcelona supporters, who called him lovingly, but the defender was overcome with emotion.
“I want to thank everyone, thanks to my teammates, the technical staff, all the doctors, and the officials of the dressing room, thank you to the board of directors for all these years,” Pique said, in his speech at the Spotify Campy Nou stadium after the match.
The seasoned defender continued, “I reached the end of my career, the decision to retire was not easy after this love that I found here in Barcelona.
“I believe this is the ideal time to finish my career with Barcelona, and I am confident that I will return to the team soon, since I left before I promised,” he concluded.
“I appreciate Barcelona supporters for the support over the past years, I was born here and I will die here, always, Barcelona,” Pique said as he put an end to his remarks.
