Study: Cyprus has one of the highest rates of child cancer in the world

According to the findings of a recent study, Cyprus has one of the highest rates of paediatric cancer in the world, with leukaemia being the most frequent diagnosis.
The study’s presenter, Dr. Louisos Louiso, a professor of paediatrics at the University of Nicosia Medical College, claimed that Cyprus’s cancer epidemic in both children and adults had not been investigated. Currently, the country has the highest infection in the world, after Italy and Belgium- according to the Cyprus Cypriot newspaper on Saturday.

Louiso pointed out that the four most common types of cancer in Cyprus are leukemia, lymphoma, selected epithelial tumors and central nervous system tumors, which make up 73 percent of all cases.
The doctor noted that children make up 1.5 percent of all cancer cases.

According to Louiso, the rates of thyroid cancer in children between the ages of 15 and 19 and for both sexes are worrying, because we are among the highest rates in the world, “There is a very high annual change by 7. 5 percent, which represents approximately 10 percent Of all types of cancer in this age group. ”
According to the study, women are three to five times more affected than men.
