Manitoba to fund new Brandon detention facility

Provincial financing totaling $8.9 million will be used to build a new detention facility in Brandon, Manitoba Premier Heather Stefanson and Justice Minister Kelvin Goertzen announced on Friday.
The goal of the project is to provide Brandon police, who have been using temporary modular cells to meet demand, with a modern, permanent facility.
The declaration comes after Thursday’s provincial news about a warrant section in Manitoba that focuses on violent, persistent criminals.

Stefanson said in a statement that “our law enforcement partners put their health, safety, and lives on the line every day to help protect fellow Manitobans, and for that, we are extremely thankful.”
“Our government is acting to make sure that our law enforcement colleagues have the equipment they need to accomplish their duties.
According to Goertzen, the province stepped in because inflation drove up project costs for the City of Brandon and its police department.

The project’s construction started in September, and it is anticipated that the new cells would be ready in January 2024.

Manitoba will pay for a new jail in Brandon.
