Canadian governments must fix health-care crisis, workers and advocates urge

Governments are being urged to cooperate in order to address the nation’s growing health care crisis by associations that represent doctors, nurses, and health groups across Canada.
A list of actions that governments should take to improve the nation’s healthcare system has been released by the Canadian Medical Group, the Canadian Nurses Association, and HealthCareCAN, an association that represents hospitals and health institutions.

A pan-Canadian licencing model that would enable doctors to work anywhere in the nation is on the “prescription for hope” list, which was also released on Friday. Other items on the list include improving mental health and wellbeing services for healthcare professionals, assisting individuals with international training in obtaining licences to fill openings, and implementing a national workforce planning strategy.

President of the Canadian Medical Association Alika Lafontaine believes governments should work together to overcome the problems that the nation’s healthcare systems are experiencing.
Canadian Nurses Association president Sylvain Brousseau says nurse shortages and other workforce issues are having a severe impact on the health-care system and government should act urgently and introduce structural reforms.

Prior to a gathering of Canada’s federal, provincial, and territorial health ministers in Vancouver the following week, the associations had made their calls.
