South Korea’s birth rate has reached an all-time low, while the mortality rate has risen.

According to official data released on Wednesday, the number of infants born in South Korea reached a record low in the second quarter, while fatalities reached an all-time high due to accelerated ageing and the COVID-19 epidemic.

According to Statistics Korea, 59,961 infants were born from April to June, a 9.3 percent decrease from the previous year, according to Yonhap News Agency.

This is the lowest second-quarter figure since the Statistics Authority began accumulating comparable data in 1981.

South Korea has a chronically low birthrate because many young people are delaying or refusing to marry or have children as a result of an economic slump, rising property costs, and shifting societal norms around marriage.
