Egypt welcomes the agreement to stop the fighting between the government of Ethiopia and the Tigrai Front

Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zaid, a spokesman and the director of the General Diplomacy Department at the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed Egypt’s sincere hopes that the agreement would help bring about a lasting peace in Ethiopia and that “it provides an opportunity for the government and people of Ethiopia to remove the effects of the conflict and address its causes, to cover wounds and rebuild social peace.”

Given the significance of this in supporting the framework of peace, security, and stability throughout the African continent, and in the East Africa area in particular, Ambassador Abu Zaid Ali emphasised that the hope and demand that peace be upon Ethiopia is shared by all peoples of the continent. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, on the other hand, thanked Egypt for the efforts made by a number of diplomats and African officials to obtain this agreement.

The government of South Africa and its president were congratulated by Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zaid for facilitating peaceful negotiations in Ethiopia.
In November 2020, fighting broke out between the forces of the Tigray region and the Ethiopian Federal Army and its supporters, which included forces from other areas and from Eritrea.
At times, the conflict went beyond Tigrai and into the nearby Afar and Amahr districts.

It was unclear whether Eritrea would abide by the deal struck because neither it nor the regional forces associated with the Ethiopian army took part in the negotiations in South Africa.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Tigray, an armed group that evolved into a political party and ruled Ethiopia for 27 years, and Abu Ahmed, a former member of its ruling coalition who was appointed prime minister of the nation in 2018 and effectively ended the front, had relations that had catastrophically collapsed prior to the start of the war.

Egypt applauds the cease-fire reached between the Ethiopian government and the Tigrai Front.
