Latvia extends the state of emergency on the border with Belarus

After thousands of migrants attempted to cross, Latvia once more proclaimed the state of emergency in the border regions with Belarus, a neighbouring country, in August of last year.
The cabinet determined in Riga today, Wednesday, that the state of emergency will last until February 10.
The interior ministry claimed that another reason for extending the state of emergency was Minsk’s backing of Russia in its conflict with Ukraine.

Bellaus, an ally of Moscow, and Russia share borders with Latvia.
Since the emergency status was declared, more than 7,500 persons have been prevented from entering Latvia illegally, according to government statistics.
The Belarusian president, Alexander Lukashenko, is charged by the European Union with purposefully sending migrants from conflict zones to the bloc’s external border.

The emergency declaration is extended by Latvia along the border with Belarus.
