More than 80 charges laid, nearly $89K fines given during Queen’s homecoming

During the Queen’s University homecoming events this past weekend, Kingston Police were present in full force.
During the Aberdeen Street festivities on Saturday, a number of nuisance parties were reported, which resulted in the police filing more than 80 charges and levying fines totaling around $89,000.
According to Kingston Police Chief Antje McNeely, “officers continued to observe aggressive, volatile, and hazardous behaviour that has sadly been all too regular these last weeks.”

“Unfortunately, we still observed many unsafe gatherings with high-risk behaviour shown throughout the weekend, despite our broad community engagement by members of the Police Liaison Team and other resources that were deployed in the lead-up to homecoming.”
Multiple crowds gathered on major thoroughfares, according to the police, endangering the safety of nearby pedestrians.
Police and Bylaw Enforcement intervened to clear multiple gatherings throughout the day.

Community partners, including police, bylaw, Frontenac Paramedics and Kingston Fire and Rescue, worked together throughout the weekend, ensuring that emergency services remained able to respond to the evolving situation while continuing to support the needs of the larger community.
According to Frontenac Paramedics Chief Gale Chevalier, “Large, unapproved crowd events like these place a great deal of additional demand on paramedics and everyone working in emergency services.”

The Ontario Provincial Police, Toronto Police Service, Ottawa Police Service, Peel Regional Police, Brockville Police Service, Belleville Police Service, Tyendinaga Police Service, and Smiths Falls Police Service once again provided help to Kingston Police.

During Queen’s homecoming, over 80 charges were filed and approximately $89K in fines were imposed.
