North Korea launches a ballistic missile towards the East Sea

On Wednesday, the militaries of South Korea and Japan claimed that Pyongyang had fired a ballistic missile in the direction of the Sea of Japan, commonly known as the Sea of the East.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missile was headed for the island of Oonjo in eastern South Korea before it was shattered in international waters in the Sea of Japan, according to the South Korean Yonhap News Agency.

The South Korean president’s office summoned an emergency meeting of the National Security Council later on Wednesday, according to the news agency.
According to the Japanese government, which was quoted by the Kyodo news agency, the object looks to be a ballistic missile.
