UNESCO awards Merkel for her efforts in receiving refugees

The UNESCO announced the awarding of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel with the Felix-Ouwe-Boigny Peace Prize for her efforts in hosting refugees.

“All members of the jury were moved by her courageous decision in 2015 to accept more than 1.2 million refugees, mostly from Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan and Eritrea,” said gynecologist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege.

“This is the legacy she left behind,” he added.
