The Ukrainian Football Association made the decision to submit an application to the International Football Association “FIFA” to have Iran disqualified from the 2022 World Cup, which will begin on November 20 in Qatar.
The Executive Committee wants to remove Iran from the competition “because of the potential involvement of Iran in the Russian-Ukrainian war,” the Ukrainian Football Association said in a statement on Monday.
FIFA and the European Football Association (“UEFA”) disqualified Russia from the international competitions, and the Ukraine team was eliminated from the World Cup qualifying round after losing to the Welsh squad.
The Ukrainian Football Association statement indicated that the Executive Committee decided to apply for FIFA to exclude Iran from the World Cup, without indicating that it can be replaced by the Ukraine team in the World Cup.
The UN Security Council resolution on imposing sanctions on Iran, the potential for Iran’s involvement in the ongoing war, as well as media reports about systematic human rights violations in Iran, which may violate the principles and standards of the FIFA Basic System, were all cited in the statement as reasons why it was decided to apply to FIFA to have the Iranian national team excluded from the World Cup in 2022.
Iran is officially required to be disqualified from the World Cup by Ukraine.
