Despite retiring from international competition after the “Matador” left the most recent World Cup in Russia in 2018, Spain’s head coach Luis Enrique accompanied seasoned defender Gerard Pique to the 2022 tournament.
Pique, 35, announced his retirement from international competition after Spain lost the last game of the last round to Russia, the host nation, but the former Barcelona coach reportedly added Pique to the initial roster of the championship, which will begin in less than three weeks, according to the Spanish newspaper “Sport” on Monday.
Numerous defence players, such as Pao Torres, Einigo Martinez, Eric Garcia, Hugo Goyamon, Ermic Laport, Diego Lorenti, and Sergio Ramos, are available on the Enrique menu.
Pique does not live his best days with Barcelona, but rather spends his worst seasons in the club’s shirt that he worn 14 years ago, after he participated in 8 games as an alternative, and became the last option even after the crisis of injuries that struck the team’s defense line.
Pique won the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 while playing 102 games for Spain.
Despite being retired, he put Pique on the first Spain roster.
