Poland chooses the United States to build the first nuclear power plant

As part of its efforts to burn less coal and achieve greater energy independence, Poland announced that it has chosen the US government and Westinghaus to build the first nuclear power plant.

The success of our joint projects is guaranteed by the strength of our cooperation with the United States, stressed Polish Prime Minister Mattheach Moravitski late on Friday. Westinghaus will deploy “reliable and safe technology” in Poland’s nuclear energy project.

“Poland has been considering building a nuclear power plant for a number of years in order to increase its energy independence and replace closed coal-fired power plants in a nation with some of the highest air pollution levels in Europe.
The Russian conflict in Ukraine and Moscow’s use of energy as a weapon in a bigger conflict with the West gave Poland’s search for energy alternatives additional significance.

According to US Energy Minister Jennifer Granholm, the $40 billion project will keep or add more than 100,000 American jobs.
