United Nations meeting on Iran’s violations .. The suppression of women is documented

The US National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, emphasised that his country is acting urgently, whether unilaterally, in collaboration with its partners, or through the United Nations mechanisms, to hold the Iranian authorities accountable for violence against its citizens, particularly women and girls, in light of the ongoing demonstrations in Iran despite the security forces’ continued suppression of the protesters.

While an internal memo revealed that the US is preparing to brief the UN in the coming days on the protests that were sparked by the death of the Iranian young woman Muhsa Amini at the religious police’s headquarters in the middle of last month, the memo also discussed ways to strengthen trustworthy and independent investigations into Iranian abuses of human rights and sexism.

This memo showed that America and Albania will hold an unofficial meeting of the UN Security Council next Wednesday, during which Iranian Sherine Abadi, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and Iranian actress and activist Nazanin Bonadi, will present.
According to Reuters, the meeting would highlight the ongoing persecution of women, girls, and members of ethnic and religious minorities in Iran.

The conference will feature a speech by Jauid Rahman, an impartial United Nations investigator on Iran, which other UN members and human rights organisations are welcome to attend.

It is significant that protests have not subsided across the nation since the death of the 22-year-old Kurdish lady on September 16, three days after she was detained by the Ethics Police while visiting Tehran with her younger brother on the grounds that she had broken the city’s strict dress codes.

Three years ago, when she passed away, Iran experienced unheard-of demonstrations. Frequently, students and young women marched with cranes with the motto “Woman of Freedom, Life,” challenging the severe regulations that had been imposed on them for decades.
