The death of the radical “Shas” movement’s leader

According to his family, the spiritual leader of Israel’s largest ultra-Orthodox political party passed away on Monday in a hospital in Jerusalem.
The Council of Torah Sages, the highest authority in the fundamentalist Shas organisation, is led by 91-year-old Shalom Cohen. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, who passed away in 2013, was replaced by him.
The Shas movement is now Israel’s third-largest political party in the Knesset (nine seats out of 120).

Tens of thousands of mourners will gather to see Cohen’s burial later on Monday. Cohen was born in Jerusalem in 1930.
