Qatar calls on the German ambassador after “provocative” statements regarding the World Cup

In response to comments made by a German Minister about the FIFA World Cup, which the Gulf emirate will host in three weeks, Qatar announced on Friday that it had summoned the German ambassador to Doha.

In a statement, the government claimed that “the Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Federal Republic of Germany Ambassador to the state and handed it over an official protest note, in which it expressed the State of Qatar’s disappointment, complete rejection, and denunciation of the statements” made by German Interior Minister Nancy Weisser regarding Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup.

She went on to say that the protest letter, which demanded “clarifications on these assertions,” was delivered to the German ambassador by the Secretary-General of the Ministry, Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi.
The Qatari reaction came the day after Weaeer said in a television interview broadcast on Thursday: “Qatar’s hosting of the World Cup was” very difficult “, stressing that” there are criteria that must be adhered to, and it is better not to give the honor to organize tournaments for such countries.

” The German minister also said in another statement that “with regard to international sporting events in the future, we must make sure that the honor of hosting and organizing human rights standards is linked to human rights standards. ”
This is the first time Doha has requested an ambassador to object to a statement made by a representative of his government regarding hosting the World Cup.

“The full refusal of the State of Qatar for these statements against a country that represents its hosting of the World Cup in justice to a region that continued to suffer from an unjust stereotype for decades,” the Qatari protest note stated.
The German minister’s assertion that these statements were made “before her official travel to Doha next week” startled the memorandum as well, as it “contravenes diplomatic practises and traditions.”
