Saskatoon Tribal Council takes on remaining Lighthouse emergency shelter spaces

The Saskatoon Tribal Council (STC) will take over management of the final 31 government-funded emergency shelter places at the Lighthouse in Saskatoon in November.
The Saskatchewan Housing Corporation (SHC) is providing a new location for the STC Emergency Wellness Centre to aid with this transition.
“Homelessness is still a serious problem in Saskatoon, and the Saskatoon Tribal Council is happy to work with the province to support even more individuals of the community.

The Fairmont facility, which serves as a wellness centre, will treat patients holistically since we consider all people to be our relatives, according to Tribal Chief Mark Arcand.
“Supports in health services, employment and training, mental health and addictions, life skills programs, and centered around healing as we transition our relatives to independent living that will be enhanced with outreach supports.

Saskatoon’s homeless population has remained unchanged since our approach to dealing with the root causes has remained unchanged. The Wellness Center supports all family members from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
The STC is leasing the new location, and renovation work on the structure will start in November.
Gene Makowsky, minister of social services and SHC, stated that homelessness is a complicated issue that calls for collaboration from many parties.

This last phase of the emergency shelter transition will take place gradually during November as the new structure is operational and client needs are taken into consideration. ”
The Lighthouse had 61 shelter spaces in total, with the Salvation Army taking over 30 of them in October.
Following problems with governance, administration, and financial controls, the province declared in June that government-funded services would no longer be provided by the Lighthouse.

The remaining emergency shelter places at Lighthouse are assumed by Saskatoon Tribal Council.
