Germany: The Russian attack on Ukraine destroyed the European dream

The German president believed that Russia’s military action on the eighth month of Ukrainian territory generated a “historic alienation” in Berlin’s relations with Moscow.
“The war broke the dream of former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in a common European homeland,” said Frank Valter Steinmeier, who belongs to a wing of socialist Democrats in Germany and has long demanded closer economic relations with Moscow for its involvement in a western global system.

He also stressed that this conflict caused a change in the world, saying in a speech on Friday: “When we look at Russia today, there is no room for ancient dreams . . . our countries stand against each other. ”
He also observed that “the Russian conflict drove his country into a different stage, into a state of instability, at a time when war, violence, and flight predominated because of fears of the spread of war throughout Europe, like wildfire.

” It is noteworthy that Steinmeier last Tuesday made a surprise visit to his first since the start of the Russian -Russian conflict to Kyiv, where he pledged to provide more support to the Ukrainian forces, especially in the field of air defense.
He had originally planned to travel there in April of last year, but Kyiv declined to let him in because of its reservations on his prior support for Western détente with Moscow.

However, after parting ways, Ukraine and Germany reconciled, especially when Berlin promised to step up its military assistance.
