Fireworks are a Halloween tradition in B.C., but many cities regulate them

Many people in British Columbia light off the fireworks on Halloween.
According to experts, the practise probably evolved from a combination of the Guy Fawkes Night tradition in the United Kingdom and the use of fireworks at other Chinese festivals.
According to Sabina Magliocco, a professor of anthropology and folklore at the University of British Columbia, the custom can be linked to Guy Fawkes Night, which was introduced to the province by English immigrants.

Guy Fawkes Night, sometimes referred to as Fireworks Night, commemorates the year that a London House of Parliament bombing plot was thwarted in 1605.
According to Magliocco, the West Coast has a distinctive Halloween experience since the British custom probably got mixed up with North American Halloween mischief culture.

Michael Kulckner, a Vancouver-based artist and historian, claims that a century ago, Chinese Canadian businessmen would celebrate the Lunar New Year with fireworks and parades, passing these customs on to the larger community.
While some localities allow fireworks on Halloween night, numerous communities across the province—including Vancouver, Kelowna, Coquitlam, Kamloops, and Surrey—have outright outlawed their use.
The following is a list of several B. C.

Municipalities deal with fireworks: According to Vancouver, the sale and use of fireworks by the general public are no longer permitted. While the use of pyrotechnics is still permitted at public celebrations like Diwali, only trained firework technicians are allowed to set them off.
Fireworks for Halloween must be let off on the evening of October 31 and require a $5 permit.
On October, the city permits low-risk fireworks to be discharged on private land.

In Richmond, it is against the law to possess, sell, or light fireworks without a permit, the application for which takes two weeks.
In Coquitlam, it is against the law to buy, sell, or use firecrackers. A Coquitlam Fire Rescue Department permission is required if the user wants to set off fireworks.
Fireworks sales are prohibited. Under specific circumstances, such as when a permit is secured for an event, they may be set off.

In the city, it’s against the law to buy, sell, or process pyrotechnics without you have a permit from the Delta Fire Department. The permit processing process takes at least ten days.
Except with a permit from the city’s fire department, the sale and usage of fireworks are forbidden. The possession of a permit is typically restricted to trained professionals who are certified in the use of fireworks, and it is uncommon for one to be issued.

For the sale, possession, or transit of pyrotechnics, a licence is necessary. Applicants must provide evidence of a business licence, a current Natural Resources Canada fireworks supervisor’s certificate, and the $1,500 permit cost for sales.
Consumer fireworks and firecrackers are never allowed to be owned or used in public.
This year, fireworks are prohibited due of the drought.
Without a permit, fireworks are prohibited.

Only specialists with appropriate licences may acquire permits. Residents who engage in unauthorised use may be subject to fines of up to $500 each.
The city charges $23 for a single display of pyrotechnics and includes a list of requirements, such as that the fireworks only be used on private land and that an extinguishing agent be available.
