China poses the “primary” challenge for the United States, according to a strategic document released on Thursday by the Pentagon, while Russia poses “significant concerns.”
The National Defense Strategy document said that China “represents the primary and most systematic challenge, while Russia constitutes serious threats to the vital national interests of the United States abroad and at home.
” The strategy added that “the most comprehensive and dangerous challenge for American national security is the forced and aggressive (Chinese) endeavors to reshape the area of the Indian, calm, and international regime to suit its interests and authoritarian options. ”
The report identifies the Chinese discourse on Taiwan, which Beijing has vowed to annex militarily if necessary, as a destabilising factor that skews assessments and jeopardises regional stability.
The plan took into account that the recent unjustified further Russian invasion of Ukraine had increased Moscow’s threat.
