John Kerry, the environment affairs advisor to US President Joe Biden, stated that his country supports the study to compensate impoverished countries for the losses and harms they generated by the phenomenon of climate change.
The countries most at danger from climate change and least responsible for emissions are demanding financial compensation, which is expected to make the Conference of the Parties “Cope 27” in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh from November 6 to 18 the tenseest one yet.
In a news conference, Kerry stated that the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement required signatories to make more efforts to address losses and damages, and that “now we have to proceed to the next level and start a real dialogue on how the world deal with” this issue.
He continued, “We are ready in Sharm El -Sheikh and completely discuss all the means through which we can try to be fair and collect the world’s efforts to help us address the fears of many countries of the world. ”
Kerry emphasised that as a result, “we firmly support the treatment of losses and damage in the context of the United Nations process.”
Although this issue was mentioned in the Paris Agreement, the wealthy nations who benefited financially from their reliance on fossil fuels choose not to address it.
This year, Kerry remarked, “I hope that everyone will be on the same wave and understand that there are some unique disagreements and that these folks deserve some unique attention.”
He added that Africa is responsible for three percent of greenhouse gas emissions in the world, but 17 countries are most vulnerable to climate change in this continent.
According to Kerry, the United States will make announcements about assisting Africa in adapting to climate change during the summit in Egypt.
Washington backs the conversation at the climate conference about giving money to underdeveloped nations.
