In a case that continues to stir up controversy in Tunisia, the Tunisian government decided to impose a travel ban on the father of the 4-year-old girl who travelled alone to Italy on an illegal immigration boat.
On Wednesday night, the first investigating judge of the third office of the Court of First Instance in the Monastir Governorate made this decision to ensure the proper operation of the investigation because the child’s parents are the only ones who can identify the person who organised the illegal immigration process, and to ensure the execution of the family judge’s ruling that the child must be delivered to The General Reception Center.
While the Italian authorities refused to hand over the girl and insisted that she keep her land, Tunisia started the restoration process.
In a statement, the Tunisian Ministry of Family and Women announced the readiness of a team affiliated with the Italian city of Palermo to visit the girl Thursday in the new center in which she was housed.
The Ministry stated that the child was a victim of an irregular migration and stated that the Tunisian state was interested in monitoring the child’s conditions and ensuring her interest. The Ministry also stated that the necessary steps had been taken to ensure the child’s safe return to the country as soon as possible.
After being separated from her parents on an illegal journey that lasted many hours, Linda, a 4-year-old child, landed on the Italian island of Lampedusa on a boat crammed with immigrants.
The father gave the girl to a smuggler on the boat and then returned to help his wife and son cross the boat, according to research done by the Public Prosecution with her parents. The entire family, which included the father, mother, and a 7-year-old son, participated in the immigration process that began from the coast of the coastal fishermen area in exchange for a fee of 24 thousand dinars (roughly 7400 dollars).
