The United States welcomes the launch of peace negotiations between Ethiopia and Tigray

The African Union is facilitating peace talks between Ethiopia and the Tigrai authority in South Africa. The United States applauded the initiative and urged all parties to take the conversations seriously in order to find a long-term resolution to the conflict.

The United Nations received “disturbing information” about air raids that took place on civilian areas in Mikeli, the capital of Tigray. Tigrai was the target of several violations at the hands of the Ethiopian army forces, which resulted in the relocation of people.

There is no military solution to this issue, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken emphasised in a news release sent by the US State Department on its website today, Wednesday: “These negotiations represent the most hopeful route to establish sustainable and prosperous peace for all Ethiopians.”

He called on the delegations taking part in the negotiations to agree to deliver humanitarian aid without hindrance to everyone in need, take action to protect civilians, and withdraw Eritrea from northern Ethiopia. He emphasised the necessity of achieving an immediate cessation of hostilities as a top priority.

In the statement, Blinken congratulated South Africa for hosting, highlighting the support of Olsigon Obasango, a former vice president of South Africa, Malmbo Najuka, and Kenyatta, a former president of Kenya, who served as peacemakers in the dispute.

The start of peace talks between Ethiopia and Tigray is welcomed by the United States.
