During her first statement to the parliament, Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni reaffirmed that her nation will continue to assist Ukraine and will not cave in to pressure from Russian President Vladimir Putin on the energy sector.
According to the British Financial Times, Meloni also stated in her speech that her government will offer financial assistance to people and businesses affected by the energy crisis, but she also cautioned that the move would be expensive and that management might have to backtrack on some of its campaign promises.
The fact that Meloni, the head of the “Italy Brothers” party, administered the formal oath as prime minister of the Italian government last Saturday makes history by making her the first woman to hold the position in Italy.
