Tuesday, the newly appointed British Prime Minister Rishi Sonak assured the president of Ukraine, Folodimir Zellinski, of the UK’s “strong” support for his nation as it fights Russia.
The British Prime Minister said in a statement that Sonak, in the first phone conversation he had with a foreign leader since he took office, “discussed with Ukrainian President Foludmir Zellinski to emphasize the UK’s firm support for Ukraine.
Sonak indicated to Zelenxi his “desire for a relative personal meeting.
For his part, the Ukrainian President expressed his hope to “strengthen” relations between Ukraine and Britain, which is one of the most prominent countries supporting Kiev in the face of Russia, indicating that he called Sonak to visit Ukraine.
Because of his steadfast support for Ukraine against Russia, former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who held the job until last September, was highly regarded in Kyiv. His resignation, which he announced in July, has raised many questions. Since the conflict began in February, Johnson has travelled to Ukraine three times; the most recent being on August 24.
The United Kingdom has provided great military support to Ukraine since the war began.
Zelinski made the following statement about his talk with Sonak in a video recording: “I am certain that the alliance that has become customary between our nation and the British leadership in protecting democracy and freedom will continue and will be enhanced.
The next day, Zellinski tweeted that he had “agreed in a fantastic talk with Rishi Sonak to write a new chapter in relations between Ukraine and the United Kingdom, but rather inside the same story: full support in the face of Russian aggression.
Sonak “indicated that the United Kingdom’s support for Ukraine during his reign will be stronger than ever, and President Zellinski may count on the ongoing solidarity of his administration,” according to a representative for British Prime Minister.
In another context, the US President called Sonak to tell him that “the United Kingdom will remain the closest partner” of Washington, according to the British Prime Minister.
Sonak and Biden “discussed cooperation between the United Kingdom and the United States, whether bilateral and in areas comparable to the Indian and calm region,” according to a statement to the government’s presidency.
Additionally, according to the statement, Sonak and Biden spoke about the situation in Northern Ireland.
Next month, Indonesia will host the Group of Twenty meeting, when the two officials will interact.
