Feds puts nearly $1B toward Ontario small nuclear project

Ontario’s BOWMANVILLE — The first compact modular reactor in Canada will be built at the site of an existing nuclear plant in Ontario with funding from the federal government’s Canada Infrastructure Bank, which will contribute around $1 billion to the project.
Ontario Power Generation is developing the project next to the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station.

Small modular reactors are nuclear power plants that are considerably smaller than conventional plants; this one is expected to produce 300 megawatts of power as opposed to the nearby Darlington facility’s 3,500 megawatts.
It is scheduled to begin generating energy in 2028.
Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson says the infrastructure bank is investing $970 million in the project and says small modular reactors are a key technology in getting to net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

In an effort to alleviate an impending shortage of electricity, Ontario recently announced a number of initiatives, including plans to expand natural gas capacity and extend the life of the Pickering nuclear power plant.
