International Migration Organization: More than 5,000 deaths on European immigration paths since 2021

Based on data from its missing immigrant project, the International Organization for Migration said in a report released today in Geneva that it has documented at least 5684 deaths on migration routes to and within Europe since the start of 2021, with an increase in fatalities observed on roads across the Mediterranean Sea, at land borders with Europe, and inside the continent.

According to the report’s author, Julia Black, the organisation has documented more than 29 thousand deaths associated with migration to Europe since 2014. She also noted that between October 24, 2022, and October 20, 2021, at least 2836 deaths and disappearances were reported on the middle of the Mediterranean Road, as opposed to the approximately 2262 deaths recorded between 2019 and 2020.

The International Organization for Migration began tracking deaths in 2014, and according to the report, 1532 deaths were recorded on the West Africa road — the Atlantic Ocean to the Spanish Canary Islands — over the time period covered by the report.

The report made note of the likelihood that the data for the current year will be lacking due to the intensive effort being made to verify the irrigated and frequent wreckage of ships, which are instances where entire boats are lost at sea without the participation of any party conducting search and rescue operations on each of these lengthy and hazardous external methods.
