Tahrir Square closed amid security alert before demonstrations in Iraq

This afternoon, on Tuesday, there will be public demonstrations in Baghdad and other governorates to remember the demonstrations of October 25, 2019, which lasted for several months and resulted in tens of thousands of fatalities and injuries.

According to a security source in Iraq, the security forces started installing concrete barriers at the entrances of Tahrir Square in the centre of Baghdad today, Tuesday, in anticipation of the start of demonstrations in numerous parts of the city. According to the source, the entrances to the islands of Sheikh Omar, Al-Sanak, the Republic, the Al-Khalani, Al-Tarawi, Granada, and Al-Nasour were all shut down as well.

Thousands of protesters filled Tahrir Square in Baghdad on this day three years ago to call for the reform of the nation’s political system, the elimination of unemployment issues, the creation of job opportunities, and the processing of corruption cases. The demonstrations were popular and began on the first of the same month.

The demonstrations spread to nine Iraqi Shiite provinces in the centre and south of the country, and according to government statistics, 600 people were killed and about 25 thousand were injured as a result of the Iraqi forces’ use of live ammunition and flaming bullets to disperse the protesters in Tahrir Square.

As a result of the outcomes of the early parliamentary elections that Iraq held on October 10, 2021 in response to the demands of the demonstrators, political blocs were unable to come to an agreement more than a year ago to create a new government.

Before the Iraqi demonstrations, Tahrir Square was blocked due to a security concern.
