Mayor Berry Vrbanovic given third term by Kitchener residents

Berry Vrbanovic will continue to serve as the chair of the Kitchener city council even though there will be a number of new members this fall.
The Kitchener mayor was unofficially elected to the office for a third time on Monday night, as he held off challenges from Rehman-Ullah Kahn, Manikantan Nair, Val Neekman and Milos Sokollu Posavljak, according to results posted on the City of Kitchener’s website.

He served as a Ward 2 councillor for 20 years before being first elected to the position of mayor in 2014.
Before submitting his application, Vrbanovic stated his opinion that homelessness, mental health, sustainability, and climate change will be some of the city’s biggest problems in the coming four years.
This fall, Kitchener Council will have at least a few new members, including Ward 3 Coun. John Gazzola, Ward 5 Coun. Kelly Galloway Sealock, and Ward 10 Coun.

Sarah Marsh decided not to run for office again.
Ayo Owodunni won the Ward 5 race by defeating Jon Massimi and Ajmer Mandur, and Jason Denault triumphed over a close six-way contest in the Ward 3 race.
In Ward 10, Aislinn Clancy will replace Marsh because she garnered fewer than 150 more votes than Stephanie Stretch.
The incumbents have been unofficially re-elected in all of the other wards.
Only 20. 26 per cent of eligible voters went to the polls in Kitchener.
