There will be a new face representing the City of Waterloo for the first time in eight years.
Unofficial results published on the municipal website show that Dorothy McCabe was chosen as the new mayor of Waterloo, Ontario, defeating Shannon Weber in the race. Rob Evans came in third, while Kypp Saunders completed the top three.
A former chief of staff to both a Kitchener mayor and a Kitchener MP, McCabe recently revealed to Global News that she has a long history of working in politics. She presently holds dual employment with the City of Milton and Conestoga College.
She responded to a Global News survey by saying, “I like the opportunity and potential that exist in Waterloo for myself, for my children, and for others.”
As mayor, I aim to guide Waterloo into an exciting future by helping to realise that promise.
A new council will be led by McCabe as three other council members followed outgoing mayor Dave Jaworski in declining to run for office.
Three council members—Ward 3’s Angela Vieth, Ward 6’s Jeff Henry, and Ward 7’s Tenille Bonoguore—did not vote on Monday night.
According to the unofficial results, Vieth will be replaced in Ward 3 by Hans Roach as he edged Madelyn Steiss in a tight race.
In a close race in Ward 6 against Matthew Schwarze, Jonathan Cassels, and Karen Fischer, Mary Lou Roe prevailed, while Julie Wright easily won in Ward 7.
In the election on Monday, only 27. 18% of eligible voters cast a ballot.
