Western warnings of a “possible terrorist attack” in Nigeria

Nigeria is battling a rebellion that is primarily concentrated in the northeast of the country, but in July, ISIS claimed credit for a prison attack in Abuja that saw the liberation of roughly 440 prisoners. This sparked worries that the militants might be leaving their strongholds.
How did London and Washington express their worries?
• The American embassy in Abuja said: “There is an increasing possibility of terrorist attacks in Nigeria, specifically the capital.

• She warned that other locations at risk include shopping malls, police stations, and the offices of international organisations.
• Until further notice, the American embassy will scale back its services. Due to the “increasing risk of a terrorist assault in Abuja,” the UK government warned its residents in Nigeria to exercise caution.
She continued: “The attacks may occur at random and may have an impact on both Western interests and tourism destinations.

When Nigerians go to the polls in February to choose a new president to succeed President Mohamed Bukhari, the insecurity that has spread throughout the country will be a key concern.
It was unable to get the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to respond on Western concerns of potential attacks.
