Egypt ranks 4th globally in generating electricity from solar energy

CAIRO – 24 October 2022: Egypt occupies the fourth place globally, in terms of the largest plants to generate electricity from solar energy, after the completion of the operation of the Benban solar plant with a capacity of 2000 megawatts, in cooperation with the private sector.
The Benban solar energy project, which won the Government Excellence Award, is a prime example of a successful partnership between investors and the government.

The highlights of the Benban Solar Complex are listed below:
1- The facility has 32 solar power plants that use solar energy to produce electricity.
2- Each station has a 50 megawatt capacity.
3- Egypt established the first fully gas-insulated GIS transformer stations.
4- Fuel is supplied for the Benban solar plants to run on.
5- The project paves the wave for incorporating clean renewable energy.

6- The project is the fourth-largest collection of photovoltaic energy plants without storage in the world.
7- The project generates more than 10,000 work opportunities both during and after the investor stations’ commercial operation.
8- The project was recognised as the finest infrastructure development project during the first session of the Arab Government Excellence Award.
9- The Benban solar complex has been called the “world capital of solar energy”.

10- The Ministry of Electricity is currently aiming to extend the project, making the total capacity produced by it the largest in the world when it reaches 2000 megawatts.

Egypt is fourth in the world for using solar energy to produce electricity.
